Sheriff's Departments can have many of the same responsibilities as State and Local Departments. They often have a wide range of specialized units, including but not limited to patrol, investigative and narcotics. In addition to these responsibilities, they generally serve papers, run county jails, operate a number of alternatives to incarceration, carry out all civil judgments, and provide security for city and county courts. They handle criminals post-arrest and deal with the courts, although many also serve warrants. In addition, they frequently run programs designed to ensure the public safety by returning offenders to the community with the skills necessary to live productively, and to provide victims of crime with services designed to heal the harm caused by violence.
