Q. I am twenty seven and would like to obtain my degree in law enforcement. I was wondering if a fifth degree assault with my younger brother when I was nineteen would affect my ability to be hired as a police officer after completing college
Also does speeding tickets or driving with a suspended license disqualify you from employment
Some websites say yes others say just felonies and domestic abuse charges
thank you
A. Hi Adam,
Thank You for your question. It is important to note that hiring practices are unique to each department. Most departments would not exclude someone with this record, but rather would take the totality of the background into consideration. However, you should see about getting it expunged since it will cause some concern in the background check.

Q. I am currently in college and wanting to become a law enforcement officer the K-9 aspect of law enforcement interests but Im not sure how I could get to this is there any special schools I could attend to look good on a resume or this a position you can only obtain over a period of time like a rank ex: sgt or detective
A. Kenny,
Thank you for your question!
While K-9 is a great assignment, like all specialties, you first serve as a patrol officer, usually for a minimum of two years, before you go to a specialty such as motors, investigations, k-9's, etc. Someone who does their homework on how to train and care for these special animals will always have the advantage in selections for such an assignment. Although you might want to become involved with k-9's right away, patrol work gives you the basic skills to excel in all specialty assignments.
Good Luck,
